Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo gives reason behind slow starts – NFL News
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has said that he tries observing his opponents’ strategy in first half of games and get more scoring drives in the second half after reading the plays well.
He was speaking in the light of Cowboys’ victory over Philadelphia Eagles in Week 13 game during which the Cowboys scored a total of 10 point in the first half, while they got 28 points (seven in the third quarter and 21 in the fourth quarter) in the second half.
Romo is of the view that starting slow in the first half allows him to read opponents’ mind and get the hang of their strategy. This, the player says, allows him to be more effective in second half after picking opponents’ soft spots in the first half.
According to the details present on Cowboys’ website, Romo said:
“I know as a quarterback, just from my perspective, there’s only so many coverages over the years you can see and show. It still comes down to blocking and tackling and throwing and catching and running. Early in the game, you don’t necessarily always know exactly what they’re playing that day. Once I get a beat on it, usually I can lock in and be pretty good.”
Romo further said:
“I think it’s just sometimes early in the game I think we need to be able to do the little things to be able to let drives extend.”
Whatever the case is, Romo is not going to be questioned about creating more plays late in the game, at least not at this stage. The recent developments including Cowboys’ victory over Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants' defeat against Washington Redskins have once again ignited competition in National Football Conference (NFC) East.
The Cowboys are now focused only on winning their remaining games that could earn them a playoff spot. If they are able to qualify for the postseason, it will also take away a lot of criticism, but if the Cowboys fail to deliver in the final quarter of the season, every other player including Romo will be brought in the line of fire.
