Dallas Cowboys reflect on 2012 draft – NFL News
The 2012 National Football League (NFL) draft is over and it was surprising to see Dallas Cowboys utilising most of their picks in adding strength to their defensive unit.
After the conclusion of the three-day draft, Cowboys’ management reflected on its decision of drafting defensive players and shared future plans.
Cowboys initially had 14th overall pick in first round of the draft, but they traded it up with St. Louis Rams and got their sixth overall pick.
The Cowboys had made that trade to make selection of LSU’s cornerback, Morris Claiborne, possible.
In the third round, Cowboys added Boise State’s defensive end, Tyrone Crawford, and the roster got more depth when the management drafted Wake Forest’s linebacker, Kyle Wilber, in the fourth round as 113th overall pick.
Cowboys’ fourth overall pick was Eastern Washington’s safety, Matt Johnson, who was 135th overall pick of the draft.
Cowboys utilised their first draft pick on offence in the fifth round in which they drafted Virginia Tech’s wide receiver, Danny Coale, as 152nd overall pick.
Their next pick was Oklahoma’s tight end, James Hanna, who became 186th overall pick in the sixth round.
Cowboys utilised their final pick by drafting Montana’s linebacker, Caleb McSurdy, in the seventh round as 222nd overall pick.
After the draft, Cowboys’ vice president, Stephen Jones, said that the team went as per its plans during the drafts and claimed that the management was satisfied with the efforts.
According to the details present on the team’s website, Jones said:
“We kind of went with our picks, and I think the biggest reason was when we got ready to pick, there was a player there we really liked and really fit with what we were trying to get accomplished for our team."
Cowboys made a trade so as to select Claiborne and it looks as if he is going to get the starting role right from the day one. However, other draft picks are expected to serve as backups.
When asked about whey the early draft picks were utilised in selecting members of the team’s defensive unit, Cowboys’ head coach, Jason Garrett, commented:
"We didn't feel like we had a gun to our head saying we've got to take this position. We were pretty true staying to our board. We had mock drafts this week where we took all of these offensive players. ... It just fell the way that it did."
