Dallas Cowboys rule out Mike Jenkins’ trade, yet again – NFL News
No matter what different media reports claim, the Dallas Cowboys have once again asserted that they are not going to trade cornerback, Mike Jenkins.
Jenkins, who started his professional National Football League (NFL) career in 2008 with the Cowboys, is in final year of his current contract and the player has not received any long-term job security from the team yet.
This is Jenkins’ main fear as the Cowboys now have some more players on their roster for the cornerback position.
In this year’s draft, Cowboys surprisingly traded up their pick to select LSU’s cornerback, Morris Claiborne, as sixth overall pick. Furthermore, they had already added Brandon Carr to the squad after giving him a five-year deal. Cowboys also have Orlando
Scandrick on the roster with more years left on his contract.
This made Jenkins to believe that his future with the team was in jeopardy and the player also reportedly desired to be traded to any other team.
Jenkins did not attend organised team activities (OTAs) when they began owing to a shoulder injury, but Cowboys’ head coach, Jason Garrett, had said that it would have been better for the player to attend the classroom sessions, at least.
Earlier, Cowboys’ owner, Jerry Jones, had also asserted that the management was not planning on trading or releasing Jenkins, but the player’s trade rumours kept making the rounds.
As per the latest development, Jones has once again denied Jenkins’ trade reports, saying that he wants to keep Jenkins on the roster.
He said of Jenkins:
“I want to emphasize the advantages that we could have with him and the other corners that we have out there. (It is) so intriguing and has the potential to be so impactful to our team that there's no draft pick that I'm interested in."
Jones had earlier said that he considered Jenkins a part of the team’s long-term plans. Now he has said that he is focusing on the upcoming season and thinks Jenkins can play a vital role in the team’s success. He said:
"There's nothing that I can conceive that would help us more as a football team and help us accomplish where we're going to be next year than having Jenkins on the team. I'm sure not interested in anything in the future. I'm all about what we can do (this)
year."
