Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten focusing on win, not record – NFL News
Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten is probably one game away from becoming the franchise’s all-time leading receiver.
Witten is just three catches away from tying former Cowboys receiver Michael Irvin’s record and four catches away from beating that record.
Irvin played for the Cowboys from the 1988 to 1999 season. In total, he caught 750 passes for 11,904 yards and 65 touchdowns.
Witten, on the other hand, has been playing for the Cowboys since the 2003 season. In total, Witten has caught 747 passes for 8,396 yards and 42 touchdowns.
Four more catches will make Witten the Cowboys’ leading receiver, but that record is expected to come at a time when the Cowboys are somewhat struggling and their playoff hopes fading.
After playing seven games this season, the Cowboys, who had started off the season on a positive note by defeating defending champions New York Giants, are 3-4 and placed at second spot in National Football Conference (NFC) East, tied with Philadelphia Eagles.
If the Cowboys want to secure a playoff berth, the must start winning games now and that is why a victory is more important for Witten than four catches.
Cowboys will play their next game against Atlanta Falcons, who are the only undefeated side in the National Football League (NFL) this season.
If the Cowboys defeat the Falcons it will certainly be an opportunity for them to initiate a fresh winning streak and Witten wants to get it done. According to the details present on the team’s website, Witten said of the record and the team’s situation:
“I don’t think you ever try to get caught up in that. Obviously, you know what’s going on. You don’t really like talking about it until it happens because you’re so focused on winning. You guys know me well enough … that’s most important.”
The tight end added:
“It’s obviously special because he’s [Michael Irvin] is one of the greatest. Just to be mentioned with Michael Irvin, it’s special. Hopefully, we’ll have a good discussion after a big win about it, once it happens. Until then, my focus is trying to help
this team win.”
