Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten’s status still not clear – NFL News
Against earlier expectations, the Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten might not be able to play until Week 2 of the upcoming regular season as the management wants him to be fully fit before stepping on the field.
Witten has been out of the field since receiving a spleen injury in the first preseason game against Oakland Raiders. He missed the next three preseason games and it now looks like he will miss a few regular season games as well.
According to Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones, the management wants to give the due time to Witten to recover completely to avoid reoccurrence of the injury during the season.
During his KRLD-FM appearance on Friday, Jones said:
"Obviously, we're here to win the ballgames, but not at the cost of the literal well-being of any individual."
It was earlier reported that Witten might be available for the season opener against New York Giants on September 05. However, it was also reported that his participation was not guaranteed and that the team would include the player into the squad, but he
might not be able to make it to the starting line-up.
Cowboys will take on Seattle Seahawks in Week 2 game and if Witten misses the game against Giants, he certainly would be expected to be ready to go against Seahawks.
Jones maintained that the coaches would make any decision on the player after clearance from medical staff. He said:
"There's a judgment issue here, and there are some standards that might or might not apply to someone that is in the physical shape but do apply to someone that has the risk that a tight end, especially Jason Witten, would create to his spleen.”
He added:
"He'll be working out, I'm sure, today. You know Jason. Boy, I don't know on or off the field, football or nonfootball, that I've ever seen anybody as driven as Jason Witten.”
Witten is fortunate that his injury is not very serious. Initially when he sustained the injury, it was reported that he might need to undergo a surgery that could have forced him out for a few months. However, that is not the case and he might be available
for Week 2 or 3, if not the season opener.
