Dallas Cowboys trying to bring in Rob Ryan as defensive coordinator
The Dallas Cowboys are working hard at trying to get Rob Ryan to become the team’s defensive coordinator.
Ryan was interviewed by Head Coach Jason Garrett and owner Jerry Jones on Friday afternoon. Although Ryan is still contracted for another year with the Cleveland Browns, the Browns are looking to move in a different direction with their new head coach, Pat
Shurmur.
Ryan is the twin brother of New York Jets Head Coach Rex Ryan and has been defensive coordinator for the Browns for the last two seasons. Before going to Cleveland, he was a defensive coordinator for the Oakland Raiders. He won the Super Bowl twice as linebackers
coach for the New England Patriots while his father, Buddy Ryan, was a National Football League (NFL) coach and irritated many Cowboys’ fans when he was with the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Browns allowed an average of 350.1 yards per game in the 2010 season, making their defence ranked at 22nd in the league. They also allowed 20.8 points per game, putting them at number 13 in the league. The Cowboys though, did a bit worse than the Browns.
They allowed an average of 351.8 yards and 27.3 points per game during the 2010 season. Although the numbers are not astounding, the Browns went from being 31st in 2009 to 22nd in 2010. They also did much better in forcing turnovers with 19 interceptions
and nine recovered fumbles.
The Cowboys are used to the 3-4 defensive scheme, and Ryan is the third coordinator to be interviewed who is used to that sort of system. However, three of the other candidates interviewed have taken up jobs somewhere else.
So is Ryan the best man for the job, or is he the only one left?
If Ryan does join the ‘Boys’ he might simply be a defensive coordinator or coach another position as well. The team is also in need of a defensive line coach after Paul Pasqualoni took up the head coaching job at the University of Connecticut. The team has
also not allowed linebackers’ coach Reggie Herring to be interviewed by the Houston Texans, but have hinted that they may allow it in the future.
