Dallas Cowboys unaware of Mike Jenkins’ plans for OTAs – NFL News
As the trade rumours of Dallas Cowboys’ defenseman, Mike Jenkins, gain more strength, the team management is apparently unaware of the player’s plans for the ongoing offseason workout.
Cowboys are going to start their organised team activities (OTAs) from Tuesday, May 22, 2012, and Jenkins’ presence in the OTAs is not confirmed yet.
Although it is a voluntary workout programme in which the presence of all players is not mandatory, the Cowboys want Jenkins to be a part of the OTAs.
Furthermore, Jenkins is rehabbing from a shoulder injury and will not be able to participate in the on-field workouts.
Nevertheless, Cowboys want him to be present during the OTAs and attend team meetings and take mental reps at least.
When asked about Jenkins’ participation in the training camp, Cowboys’ head coach, Jason Garrett, told the
Fort Worth Star-Telegram that he is hopeful of having the player in the OTAs. However, the head coach did not confirm that the player would attend the OTAs.
Jenkins started his professional National Football League (NFL) career in 2008 with the Cowboys.
He started only three games while playing 14 in his rookie season, but his impressive performance forced the management to give him the status of the regular starter from his second season.
Recently, Cowboys added a few defensemen to the squad and the move threatened Jenkins’ position as well.
A couple of months ago, Cowboys signed former Kansas City Chiefs’ defensive back, Brandon Carr, on a six-year deal.
Also, they traded up their pick in the 2012 draft to select Louisiana State University’s cornerback, Morris Claiborne, who has not been able to practise with the team yet owing to an injury.
Carr’s selection along with the desperate attitude that Cowboys showed to select Claiborne suggested that the Cowboys would give more responsibilities to the two players in the upcoming season.
Not only that, Cowboys’ also have services of defensive back, Orlando Scandrick, who still has more than two years left in his present contract with the team.
All the three players are expected to be with the team for a long period of time as per their respective contracts, but Jenkins’ contract is set to expire in 2012.
With so much going on Cowboys have hoped to have Jenkins on the roster, but they have not yet spoken if they are planning to award him a contract extension.
