Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant issues statement regarding assaulting mother– NFL News
Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant issued a statement about his recent incident involving his mother in a press conference on Tuesday, July 24, 2012.
Moreover, his mother Angela Bryant was also present there. She sat alongside Bryant during the whole news conference as their attorney Texas state senator Royce West read the prepared statement in front of media. It said:
“Did a family disagreement occur? Yes. Did Dez Bryant commit family violence against his mother? No.”
Bryant was arrested last week after an incident that occurred on July 14, 2012, in which he was alleged to hit his mother. He was arrested on family domestic violence charge.
West continued the statement and said:
“They are here today to show they do love and support each other, just as much as they did before the incident a week ago. But like all families, the Bryants have disagreements.”
Dallas police placed a Class A misdemeanour family violence charge on Bryant. Bryant had clean criminal record before this.
Both Cowboys and the National Football League (NFL) have previously said that they are looking into this matter seriously. Bryant has not yet met with any officials of his team or the NFL regarding this matter.
The case is still being reviewed in the District Attorney’s office that is inconclusive about putting up charges against Bryant. Talking about this issue, West said:
“They ask that there not be a rush to judgment concerning their family. They also ask for your continued prayers and support for their family as they work through this matter.”
As Bryant was about to leave the news conference, he said:
"I would love to make a statement, but I can't."
Many prominent figures from Cowboys’ camp have been vocal in support of Bryant. Even their elite quarterback Tony Romo has expressed his support to Bryant during this low time of his life.
Bryant will be looking to get this matter resolved before the start of the season. However, it will be difficult to predict what kind of sanction, if any, the NFL will place on him.
