Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Kevin Ogletree regrets showing lack of urgency against Baltimore Ravens
Much has been said and will be said about kicker Dan Bailey’s missed field goal attempt against Baltimore Ravens in Week 6 game, but the blame of Cowboys’ defeat goes not to kicker only.
Although there is no excuse for missing the field goal, there is no denying either that chances for a successful attempt would have been much more if Bailey had less than 51 yards to cover.
Why Bailey did not get less yards to cover is the debate that will go on for a while and might overshadow the kicker’s failure.
Trailing by two points towards the end of the game, Cowboys had the ball possession. On one drive, quarterback Tony Romo sent a pass to wide receiver Dez Bryant while other receivers Kevin Ogletree and Miles Austin ran vertical routes.
When the drive was over, Cowboys still had around 20 odd seconds left and they could have initiated another drive to gain some more yards before calling a timeout to set up a field goal for Bailey.
However, that did not happen, and although Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett has taken the blame for calling the timeout late and not managing the clock properly, the responsibility also lies on Ogletree and Austin, who did not show urgency to return to the
line of scrimmage to initiate another drive.
If the receivers had returned quickly, Cowboys might have initiated another drive to reduce the distance for Bailey.
According to the details present on the team’s website, Ogletree has said that he and Austin feel bad about showing lack of urgency. He said:
“I know that’s my job to get there and get to the line. I know Miles and I both feel bad about what happened because we know the outcome. We know we missed the field goal and how close that was and how precious yardage was at the end of the day. So getting
back to the line of scrimmage, maybe getting the play called, I think this will all be great for us going forward in learning a lesson.”
Meanwhile, Garrett has also acknowledged that they would have been able to gain more yards if the receivers had returned quickly. However, he has also admitted that it was not easy for them to return quickly as they had run vertical routes.
