Dallas Mavericks: A team in shambles at the moment – NBA Feature
Before coming into free agency, Dallas Mavericks looked to be the team with all the right options to make all the right moves. However after the recent turn of events, the plan to comeback strongly next season is falling apart
piece by piece.
The most prominent setback Dallas faced recently was the re-signing of Deron Williams to Brooklyn Nets, a player they had been in hot pursuit of for over a year, and had cleared up enough cap space to lure him in.
However despite having a four year deal worth $75 million on the table, Williams chose to go with a year longer option offered by the Nets which would automatically see his income $25 million more than what Dallas offered.
The decision from Williams was a smart business move given the fact that the Nets have worked extremely hard to rejuvenate their roster. However, Dallas’s decision to disassemble a team which won the championship in 2011, in a
hope to find better options, is coming back to haunt them and apparently their long-run plan of coming back to supremacy is in shambles.
Dallas let players like Tyson Chandler and J.J. Barea walk away last off season in a bid to clear enough cap space to pursue Williams this year. However with Williams staying in Brooklyn and no equivalent solution materializing
any time soon, Dallas are looking at season of struggles. And to make it worse, this is not the only setback Dallas has come face to face in the past few days.
Jason Terry has reportedly agreed to sign a three year deal with Boston Celtics, bringing an end to his 8 year tenure with the team with which he became an NBA Champion and a Sixth Man of the Year.
At the moment it seems as though nothing is going in favour of the Mavericks. They are looking for a player who would not only share the throne with Dirk Nowitzki but also look to take over as a franchise player, following the
German’s retirement, but the options available are getting plucked one by one.
Dallas had been considering bringing back Steve Nash over from Phoenix Suns as a backup to the Williams deal, but the two times MVP has agreed to a sign and trade deal with Los Angeles Lakers.
The remaining alternatives are getting bleaker as we speak with their third option, Goran Dragic agreeing to a four year deal with Phoenix Suns, Jason Kidd still not sure to stay with Dallas or go over to New York Knicks and Jeremy
Lin being lured by Houston Rockets.
Considering the situation, Dallas will be best suited to consider re-signing combo guard, Delonte West who is also a free agent this year.
However there can be no doubt that Dallas will come into next season with an even more depleted line up, with players signed on a maximum of one year contracts, and they might not even be able to make it to the playoffs.
Coach Rick Carlisle, Mark Cuban and Donnie Nelson have a lot at their plate at the moment and the rebuilding phase has probably arrived upon them earlier than they would have wanted.
The key for them now is to maintain the financial flexibility and then consider luring in Dwight Howard, Chris Paul or James Harden - all three being free agents next season - with a lot cap space still available. But, considering
what they just went through with Williams, there is no guarantee of anything at the moment.
