Dallas Mavericks Dirk Nowitzki hasn’t marked down return date yet – NBA Update
The Dallas Mavericks super star Dirk Nowitzki has been out resting for 3 games now and the forward is not yet sure of a return date. The German giant revealed this while talking to reporters for the first time since his rest began.
Dirk has been suffering from some pain in his knees and the Dallas management though it best to let him work out the issue off the court rather than risk an injury. Nowitzki sore right knee was initially expected to keep him out for 4 games but now it turns
out the player could face more time on the sidelines.
"I feel better. I think it was definitely a good week for me to work on some stuff that I wasn't able to work on when I had some trouble with my knee," Nowitzki said.
Nowitzki also revealed that the Mavericks matchup against San Antonio Spurs, another power house of the Western Conference, was considered the likely date of return for him but there was nothing definitive.
"We were always shooting for Sunday, so we'll just take it day by day and see how these next two days of training go and keep pushing myself, twice a day. But that's where my head is, hopefully Sunday, and we'll go from there."
Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle has suggested that other than the knee, the layoff should help Nowitzki get in better shape. The franchise is conscious about the fact that Dirk didn’t have a proper pre-season because of the lockout and didn’t have a proper
layoff because of his participation with the German National Men’s Basketball Team in the off season.
Therefore, more time off to get his conditioning up to notch only seemed reasonable for them. The star forward though doesn’t think this was necessarily a reason for the rest and believes it has more to do with the knee.
"No, I don't know why coach threw that out there," Nowitzki said. "I didn't have any problem with conditioning at all. You can never work hard enough on conditioning, but that wasn't holding me back."
Dirk is the longest serving current Dallas Mavericks player and since arriving from Germany has become synonymous with the franchise. He has therefore endeared himself to the Mavs fans not only because of his excellent play on the court but also for his
loyalty and commitment to the cause.
After years of underachievement by Mavericks resulted in many calling for Nowitzki to leave for greener pastures, Nowitzki reaffirmed his loyalty to the club by signing a new, low value, deal in 2010. Last season he led the team with brilliant performances
in the post season, playing the most important role in their NBA World Championship triumph.
