Mavs coach Rick Carlisle talks about what Chris Kaman brings to the table with his versatile offence...
Over the last few years, the Dallas Mavericks have struggled to find a quality big man who can play centre and fit it in well into their offensive system. The most successful they have been at finding such a piece was Tyson Chandler
and with him performing, the Mavs won their first ever NBA Championship in 2011.
However, Chandler’s stay too was short lived as Mark Cuban’s strategy to decrease budget costs led to several key players from the championship team moving away, and that eventually resulted in a lacklustre performance in the playoffs
last season. This pursuit of a quality centre has been going on for quite a while now, but the Mavs just don’t seem to find a suitable option to pair up with Dirk Nowitzki in the front court.
So what have the Mavericks done to resolve their issues at 5 as they look to bounce back from their performances of last season? Even though their plans for the summer suffered a setback with Deron Williams going back to Brooklyn,
they have gone about their business and executed plan B and within that plan they might have found an answer.
The contingency plan led the Mavericks to bring in big man Chris Kaman. Even though, Kaman might not be considered among the true dominating big men in the league, the Mavericks certainly hope that he can be the answer with his
versatility make jump shots as well.
"The only thing I can promise you about Chris is that he's got a different game than we've ever seen with any Mavericks big man because of the different things that he can do," Rick Carlisle said. "I can promise all the writers
and the media people that there will never be a dull moment with his quotes."
With his ability to step out and shoot the ball, Kaman brings a new dimension to the Mavericks offence and they most certainly need him to be in his best form if they want Dirk Nowitzki to be successful in his final two seasons.
Another thing which suits the Mavericks with Kaman’s arrival is that he has played with Nowitzki and Elton Brand before, and getting along would not be that big of an issue. However, one thing that might end up getting in the way
of their aspirations is Kaman’s injury troubles which have cause him to miss double-digit games in the five of the previous 9 seasons.
