Dallas Mavericks forward Shawn Marion says he won’t report to a bad team – NBA Update
The Dallas Mavericks won their first NBA Championship in 2011 when against all odds they beat Miami Heat in a thrilling series. However ever since that coup, they have been a team sliding in one direction only, and that is down.
In the summer that followed the Mavs let go of their major championship assets via free agency, and after a first round exit in the last playoffs, they made little effort to retain Jason Terry and Jason Kidd.
They did manage to get some talent in the free agency after the Jasons left, but when the season started Shawn Marion and Dirk Nowitzki were the only two survivors of the championship winning team.
The results have been disastrous so far and at 21-18, the Mavs are currently at the eleventh spot in the Western Conference, six and a half games behind the eighth placed Houston Rockets. Barring a miracle, it has now become very
difficult for them to make it to the playoffs. One way can be a block buster trade that results in an instant lift, and the Mavs are reportedly in search of something like this. Their bargaining chips are however understood to be Shawn Marion and Vince Carter.
Marion doesn’t mind a trade, but talking to reporters recently, he stressed that it would only be acceptable to him, if he lands on a team with championship credentials
"If I'm going to get traded, they're going to tell me what's going on and where I'm going," the 14-year veteran said. "Because if I'm going to a (expletive) situation, I'm not going. It's just that simple.
"At this time, I'm too old to be trying to go through and be a, you know what I'm saying, not have a chance to do anything. I'm at a point where I want to be playing for something right now."
Marion added that should the trade occur against his desires, he would not report to the new team, and also hinted that retirement would be an option;
"That's the only way I'm going, yeah," Marion said. "Yeah, that's it. That's the only possibility that could come out of that. Other than that, it ain't happening."
