Dallas Mavericks in trouble as Shawn Marion suffers knee injury – NBA Update
Shawn Marion is an integral part of the Dallas Mavericks roster but the team will have to do without the veteran for the next game, or the next few, depending on the condition of his knee.
Mario has been playing with a sprained knee for quite a while now and recently has been so bothered with the pain that he decided to sit out a game. The team has now confirmed that he will sit out the match on Monday as well.
Dallas Mavericks head coach conveyed his dismay regarding the injury to Marion. Carlisle said Marion was one of the most important players in the locker room and the team relied on him a lot, especially this season when they have hit a couple of rough patches.
He did though maintain that the well being of Marion was the biggest concern.
"When you've a guy that's played every game and then he misses two games, it's a concern,'' Carlisle said.”We care about him a lot because he's one of our main guys and he's really been one of our warriors all year long. We've got to get to the bottom of it and hopefully we can get him back quickly because we need him. Defensively, he's the best we've got."
Shawn is a versatile player who has been a model of consistency for the Mavericks this season. He has been an ever present for the team whilst other players have taken spells off to rest or nurse injuries. He is not only a valuable outlet on offense, but also arguably the best defender on the team.
Therefore he carries out key tasks in the Dallas defence, which has suffered this season due to the departure of centre Tyson Chandler as a free agent and the injury to Brandon Haywood.
Before the game against San Antonio Spurs on Saturday the player finally decided to give his knee a rest and opted out of the game. He had considered sitting out on Thursday, against the Charlotte Bobcats, but decided to give it another go.
Marion has now revealed that the soreness in his left knee hasn’t gone away despite therapy and he feels he should get some rest before the injury is aggravated.
"It's not any worse, but the thing is, it isn't getting better," Marion said prior to Saturday's game. "There's a lot of discomfort. It makes me conscious of everything I'm doing."
The injury woes for Mavericks are nothing new in this demanding and congested NBA season, with the many veterans in the team feeling the burnt. However Dallas have plenty of depth in their roster, meaning that Lamar Odom and Vince Carter would be available to fill the void left by Marion.
