Mark Cuban remains adamant that his contingency plan to sign key role players is going to reap benefits....
The Dallas Mavericks had high hopes for this year’s free agency as they very openly went in pursuit of Deron Williams.
However, all their expectations went tumbling down following Williams’s re-signing with the Brooklyn Nets. But the Mavericks have been working on a contingency plan ever since and have gone about their business in a very effective
way.
There plan was to bring in role players around Dirk Nowitzki and in their pursuit, the Mavs acquired Elton Brand, O.J. Mayo, Chris Kaman, Darren Collison and Dahntay Jones. All five of them were introduced on Monday at the American
Airlines Center.
"We went on the option for the big free agent. That didn't work out. Honestly, that wasn't my first choice," owner Mark Cuban said. "Sometimes the best deals are the ones you don't do and they lead to better things. And I think
that's what happened now."
Brand, after being waived off by the Philadelphia 76ers, was picked by the Mavericks off the waivers while Mayo and Kaman both were free agents during the summer. Collison and Jones were traded from the Indiana Pacers in exchange
for Ian Mahinmi.
That however does not mean that the Mavericks are out of the woods as they have a long way to go before they can start playing basketball at the same calibre which saw them win the 2011 NBA Championship.
While they have made valid key additions to their roster and have a full 15 player squad for the coming season, there are only four players from the Championship winning team left on the roster, Jason Terry went over to the Boston
Celtics this summer and Jason Kidd made his way over to the New York Knicks shortly afterwards.
However, Cuban remains adamant that the decision to let go several key pieces a season before – something he has been widely criticized for - was very justified as under the new CBA rules things could have not been done in a different
manner.
"We were talking a calculated risk, you guys knew what I was trying to do up front," Cuban said
Let’s just all hope that Cuban knows what he is talking about.
