Dallas Mavericks looking to make an aggressive bid for Luis Scola – NBA Update
According to recent reports, Dallas Mavericks are preparing to make a strong pitch to land Luis Scola, provided they are unable to acquire Elton Brand who was recently amnestied by the Philadelphia 76ers.
As per the amnesty waiver process, teams functioning under the salary cap have a chance to make a bid at the players being relieved of their contracts. But provided the fact that Portland Trail Blazers and Phoenix Suns are also
in the pursuit of Brand, Mavs are already looking at other suitable options.
Luis Scola has so far not been amnestied officially, but there have been reports that the Houston Rockets, in a bid to clear some cap space, have decided to waive their power forward. Scola is owed $21 million for the next three
years.
The move has been made to offer a better proposal to the Orlando Magic in a bid to land Dwight Howard. With an additional cap space, the Rockets can now, not only offer the Magic some talented draft picks, but have also developed
the capacity to absorb the heavy contracts of Hedo Turkoglu and Jason Richardson.
It may turn out to be a wise choice for the Mavericks to keep a backup option, considering the severity of the setbacks they have had to encounter in the last couple of days. The biggest setback faced by Mavs came when Deron Williams
re-signed with the Brooklyn Nets and was followed by Steve Nash’s move to the Los Angeles Lakers.
That was not the only disappointment they have had to face in the off season so far. Jason Kidd and Jason Terry, two of their most key pieces in bringing a championship, have also left the team to join New York Knicks and Boston
Celtics respectively.
After seeing most of their plans for the summer go down the drain, Dallas have been looking to consolidate their roster for the coming season and having a player like Scola could be very beneficial for them.
The Argentinean big averaged 15.5 points and 6.4 rebounds last season and can be a viable option for the Mavs on the glass.  He has got the ability to play extended minutes and even if the Mavs succeed in landing Brand, going after
Scola would be a good bet, as he can backup both him and Dirk Nowitzki on the front court.
