Dallas Mavericks looking to retain the same squad for next season: NBA Update
Dallas Mavericks won their first ever National Basketball Association championship title and fulfilled the dream of their current owner Mark Cuban. The franchise was formed by Donald Carter way back in 1980 and since then they
were ring less.
The Mavs got a chance in 2006 when they made it to the NBA finals against Miami Heat, but in the end they fell short and dropped the series. Since then, Cuban and his management put days and nights of efforts to form this champion
squad and their hard work finally paid off in 2011.
Now the Mavs have won their first title after a very long time they don’t want to take that long again to win another one, as they strongly believe that now they have the line-up, which have the fire power that can claim another
title.
Mavericks General Manager Donnie Nelson said, "Our plan is to get the same crew back and let's take another run at it. In an ideal world this team would come back and we'd make another run."
This will be the Mavs next task, although they knew that this is not going to be that easy. The one obstacle that stands in their way at the moment is that their six key players will become free agents as their contracts’ expiry
is fast approaching.
The list includes guard Jose Juan Barea centre Tyson Chandler, Peja Stojakovic, forwards Caron Butler, DeShawn Stevenson and Brian Cardinal. It will be interesting to see, who will be at the top of Dallas’ priority list.
When Nelson was inquired about it, he said, "I love them all, they're all part of the family. So how do you separate your daughter from your son?"
Chandler is definitely going to be the first priority, as he showed solid defence during the Mavs successful run.
Dirk Nowitzki said during an interview, "Obviously we'd love to get a deal done with Tyson and keep him here in the long run. His positive energy, his defence, I think is what turned this whole thing around and what won it for
us in the playoffs."
After Chandler comes J.J. Barea, who played most of the playoffs as a reserve, joined the starting line-up of the Mavs in game-4 of the NBA Finals, when Dallas coach Rick Carlisle rotate the roster and Barea didn’t let his coach
down. Barea lifted the Mavs’ offensive unit with his immaculate speed and changed the typical game of Dallas.
Caron Butler, who missed most of the regular-season due to a knee injury, remained with the team after his surgery and was the real source of motivation for the Mavs. Dallas players dedicated their run to Butler because of his
behind the curtain efforts that gave them the boost which they require. Besides motivating his side Butler worked hard on his fitness and finally got into the action, so this squad is incomplete without him and makes him his No. 3 on the priority list.
Peja Stojakovic though failed to impress against the Heat, but his quality shooting from the three-point range easily earns him a place in the line-up. Stevenson, who was struggling in the starting line-up, was pushed to the reserves
and he did well at that post, as he isolated and shot well from the perimeter. Cardinal also showed sparks in the finals and proved that he can be trusted for the job.
