Dallas Mavericks make a surge towards strengthening their defense; Bring in point guard Corey Brewer
In yet another trade of the 2010-2011 season, the desire to win prevailed over money and brought a veteran guard to an elite team. On Thursday, Corey Brewer followed the footsteps of his fellow veteran swingman, Mike Bibby and bought out his agreement with
the New York Knicks to join a realistic Championship contender.
The only difference is that Brewer went to the Dallas Mavericks, the franchise that is at the second spot in the Western Conference instead of Miami Heat that is second in the top-heavy East.
On Thursday, it was confirmed that the Dallas Mavericks have acquired the Corey Brewer for next three seasons in a contract worth around $7.5 million. Brewer signed this contract with the Mavericks after he was waived off by the New York Knicks on Tuesday,
for whom he did not play even a game.
Although, there is not much to like about Brewer's offensive game, the 6ft 9in slender swingman is a welcome addition in the Mavericks defense line. Averaging 8.6 points and 2.7 rebounds per game with superfluous athleticism, Brewer will surely be a man
to watch in Mavericks roster for the upcoming thriller against Indiana Pacers on Friday. He will appear in the No.13 jersey.
The Mavericks’ Coach Rick Carlisle is very optimistic about Corey Brewer’s role and indicated that Brewer will have some time in the centre against the Indiana Pacers.
“If we get a defensive situation where he can help us, we'll put him in there”. He further commented,”He's different in terms of his body type than any guy that we have, He's a deceptively tall kid, has got long arms. I think probably his tenacity is as,
or more, important than any of those other attributes”. He said.
The presence of Brewer will also bring a potential youth and a touch of new excitement for the relative current older roster in the Mavericks. He would be playing as a wing defender and surely will play a key part in upcoming playoffs, for which Dallas is
assured.
A bevy of top flight teams including, the Oklahoma City Thunder, San Antonio Spurs and the Boston Celtics also pursued Brewer’s after he became a free agent. But, Brewer eventually made up his mind to switch to Dallas.
Upon his arrival, he said,
"You always want to be a winner, once you taste winning, you want to keep winning. I haven't won since I got in the NBA. I'm happy to be on a winner."
The former small forward at Florida Gators, Brewer helped them win two NCCA Championships in 2006 and 2007. He was also named the Most Outstanding Player in 2007. This was his first major individual award and thrust for his spirit to go ahead for further
achievements.
He was chosen seventh overall in 2007 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves. The 25-year stayed at the twin cities for about four years, until he was acquired by the New York Knicks on February 22nd 2011 in a blockbuster three way deal from
the Minnesota Timberwolves, which also brought Carmelo Anthony from Denver Nuggets.
