Dallas Mavericks need Tyson Chandler to be contenders next season - NBA Feature (Part-1)
With the arrival of the Tyson Chandler last season, Dallas Mavericks not only solved the problem of a big they required to complement the Dirk Nowitzki, the franchise was also able to complete all the ingredients a NBA championship
contender needs.
And after years of struggle and disappointments, the Mavs finally managed to get their hands on the holy grail of basketball – the NBA Championship.
Same was the case with Chandler. After years of under achievements, the centre finally played to his true potential, one that was projected, when he was roped in as the second overall pick in the 2001 NBA draft.
With the passage of time, it became apparent that adding the 29-year-old centre was one of the best decisions made by the Dallas Mavericks’ owner Mark Cuban last off season. As the season progressed, Chandler proved to be the back
bone of the Mavs defence. His agility and the ability to adapt on both ends of the court are the two main strengths which makes him a formidable threat for any opposition.
Last post season, whether it was the agility of the Portland Trail Blazers, the experience and guile of the Los Angeles Lakers, the talent of the Oklahoma City Thunder or the sheer aggression and ability of Miami Heat’s triple
ripple, Tyson Chandler maintained his composure and at every stage, stood his ground.
The way Chandler blossomed last season in the Dallas colours left everybody awestruck, not least the Mavericks. Their problem however is that the big man is a free agent and given the way he performed last season, there will be
many teams which will be eyeing the centre.
Dallas will no doubt be the first in line to do, however for them, the situation is rather complex. The Mavs have six players from last season’s championship team, who will free agents whenever the league gets back to business.
Among them are Juan Jose Barea, DeShawn Stevenson, Brian Cardinal, Caron Butler and Brendon Haywood. If the Mavs decide to go with Chandler in the free agency, they might have to lose out on the majority of remaining players.
Considering the salary caps, mid-level exception and other restriction that are expected to come along with the new Collective bargaining Agreement (CBA), the Mavericks won’t be able to extend the contracts of all of the players
from the championship line-up.
However, one thing they must do is to re-sign Tyson Chandler.
Chandler is in the prime of his career for one and secondly, players of his species are very difficult to come by. In the second part, we will discuss some reasons why the Mavs should pursue with Chandler if they are to pose a
championship threat next season.
