Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban blames new CBA for offseason changes – NBA Update
After getting swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round of the playoffs, Dallas Maverick owner, Mark Cuban has defended himself for the moves he made in the off season and blamed the new labour agreement for being the
main cause for those offseason trades.
Mavs won their first NBA Championship in franchise history last season. It was not just due to the splendid performances by the German Dirk Nowitzki, rather it was all the other pieces like Tyson Chandler, J.J. Barea and DeShawn
Stevenson, who played significant roles in that title winning teams.
Since that time those player no longer play for the Mavs and have moved on with their career. However, Cuban is adamant of the fact that he made the right chances in accordance with the new Collective Bargaining Agreement of the
NBA.
“h**l no,” Cuban said “Nope. Not even a millisecond. Because those who are talking otherwise haven’t read the CBA and are just talking out their (expletive) without any foundation. But that’s what you guys do”
“Given what happened, I think we put together a d**n good team. If we had one break, one call, one bounce, we’re having a completely different conversation and you’re thinking how smart we are instead of how stupid we are”
Since leaving the Mavs and adorning the New York Knicks, Tyson Chandler went on to win the Defensive Player of the Year Award this season, however, it is not his defensive work that Dallas has missed. It has been his work off the
ball while cleaning up the glass that has been a missing ingredient for the Mavs this season.
Even though, many critics would label Cuban as ‘stupid’ for letting all these key players go, however the fact still remains that He (Cuban) is right about the CBA and allowing several players to leave the franchise was a good
decision on the business end.
According to the new rules the more you are over the cap the higher the tax will be. Just to explain it out a little bit, for every dollar over the salary cap the tax would have been $2.50 and $4.25.
Given the circumstances, Dallas have been very high spenders in the past few years and even though it has worked out for Cuban in getting a Championship it would have taken its till business wise. By the time this regularity had
come into effect in 2015, if the Mavs were $10 million over the tax figure, they would have had to pay $17 Million.
Even though man would blame Cuban for trying to make up for it by signing Lamar Odom which turned out to be a disaster, it still has left him with a huge chunk of money to apply in the off season while thinking towards the rebuilding
process.
Cubans decision to offload several players leaves the Mavs with a lot of room under the salary cap and with a lot players becoming free agents at the end of the season, the best prospect being Deron Williams, Dallas cane work their
way into becoming a better team.
