Dallas Mavericks unrestricted free agent J.J. Barea wants what he deserves: NBA Update
As the 2011 free agency is drawing near, the buzz regarding the possible destinations of different free agents is getting stronger and stronger.
The 27 years old point guard Jose Juan Barea, who proved to be a live wire in the offensive unit of the Dallas Mavericks during their 2011 championship run, is now a free agent and is attracting a lot of suitors. Therefore, he is also the centre of several rumours regarding his move in the free agency.
The Mavs have reportedly offered him a one year contract but the 6-ftguard said in his recent telephonic interview that,
“I still haven’t signed with nobody,” yet. “I just want what I deserve.”
His statement is a clear indication that Barea is not happy with only a one year extension and he will look out for other bidders.
Barea was sensational last season, when he came off the bench and gave Mavs the boost time and time again. He was especially lethal in the playoffs, when his short scoring burst and pick and roll often left the very best in the business dumbfounded.
The Puerto Rican star is just the tonic that every team needs from the bench. Despite being one of the smallest players in the league, he is agile and is a demon from the perimeter.
His worth after the last season heroic has certainly gone up and teams like Miami Heat and the New York Knicks would certainly be interested. Both teams have however major portion of their salary consumed by the star players and might not be able to offer that much money to Barea. The two Eastern Conference elites though possess the pedigree to help Jose land another championship belt.
Any suitor that comes his way will also consider the fact, that he is not a proven starting material as of yet and in his five years as a Mavs, was only used as an impact player. In this situation not many teams will be having him on their priority list and may rope him as a last option. Under these circumstances, it is pivotal for Barea not to aim too high.
