Dallas Mavericks want Caron Butler to stay for the next season – NBA Update
The Dallas Mavericks want injury stricken star Caron Butler to sign on for the club next season. This was revealed by the player’s agent Raymond Brothers.
Butler was a big part of the Dallas Mavericks side before he had surgery on his knee in January. Before he went through the procedure, the starting five of the Dallas Mavericks had Tyson Chandler, Dirk Nowitzki, Caron Butler, DeShawn
Stevenson and Jason Kidd in it. The Mavs combination up front was considered by many as the most balanced starters in the league.
However, Butler’s tragic injury ruled him out of the side’s championship run. He tried to make a comeback in every round of the playoffs, but doctors didn’t clear him to play.
The Mavericks recruited Peja Stojakovic to replace the injured wingman and went on to win the NBA World Championship, defeating two-time reigning champions the Los Angeles Lakers on the way and beating the star studded Miami Heat
in the NBA Finals.
However, as any class organization would do, the Mavs are already planning for next season, looking at ways to improve a team that won it all. One such way is simply getting a healthy Caron Butler to come back.
His agent said that the Mavs General Manager had made contact with him in this regard and Butler would definitely be interested in staying with the NBA World Champions,
“After the championship was over,” (Butler’s agent Raymond) Brothers said, “Donnie (Nelson, Mavs GM) texted me and told me he wanted Caron to be part of the team long term…”
“His preference is to stay with Dallas and help them compete for a championship,” Brothers said. “We are optimistic and hopeful that we’ll come to an agreement that works for both sides.”
When healthy, Caron Butler is a pretty handy player. He is a terrific penetrator, good shooter and a competent defender. Before getting injured last season, the player was averaging around 15 points per game.
Imagine how much better the Mavericks would be with those 15 points when they already have Dirk Nowitzki dominating and Jason Terry lighting up arenas with his shooting.
With both the player and the franchise interested, the only hurdle in a deal will be the salary cap situation of the Mavericks, who are already over the limit and the new CBA could make things much more complicated for them.
Butler is not the only player the Mavs are looking to hang onto as both Tyson Chandler and Jose Barea are also free agents this summer. Ideally the Mavericks would like to keep the trio, but the salary cap can only have room for
so many players.
