Dallas Stars’ Derek Roy undergoes surgery; not to play until November -NHL Update
Dallas Stars’ newly signed center Derek Roy has underwent a surgery on Wednesday and will remain out until November now. Roy went through a medical and was cleared but the problem was detected during an intense physical which took place in Dallas, which
gave birth to the need of undergoing surgery.
He had played last season with the problem but it was not known then. Dallas Stars have decided to keep the specifics of the injury undisclosed.
General Manager of the Dallas Stars, Joe Nieuwendyk, told Dallas Morning News, "He played through it before and he could have played through it again, but we want the best Derek Roy we can get," Nieuwendyk told reporter Mike Heika. "It was a group decision,
and we felt [surgery] was the best decision."
It has happened just nine days after Dallas Stars signed Derek Roy from Buffalo Sabres in exchange for two of their players, the center Steve Ott and Defenseman Adam Pardy. This shows the caliber and the quality of the player that he has gone in exchange
with two of Dallas Stars players.
The 29-year-old Canadian had played 80 games last season, scored 17 goals and picked up 27 assists. And this was his performance with an injury as told by Joe Nieuwendyk. If that was his performance with an injury, much better performance can be expected
from him when he would return with full fitness after the surgery in November.
Dallas Stars had two choices in front of them, one to make Derek play with the pain like last season or make him go under the knife and they appeared to have made a right choice by deciding to make him miss the first month.
Derek’s return before Dallas Stars game against New York Rangers is questionable now but they would surely check his fitness again close to the season to make him play as early as possible.
Roy had also suffered an injury during the 2010-2011 season, which forced him to miss half of the season and he could play just 35 games in that season. He played eight seasons with Buffalo Sabres before being exchanged, playing in 549 games, scoring 161
goals, giving 266 assists which earned him total of 427 points.
