Dallas Stars' GM Joe Nieuwendyk to keep Brenden Morrow on squad -NHL Free Agency Update
Like Rick Nash and many others, Brenden Morrow has become a targeted player this offseason, despite having one year left on his contract, but according to Dallas Stars’ general manager, Joe Nieuwendyk, the captain is going to stay and play in another National Hockey League (NHL) regular season.
St. Louis Blues have emerged as the team topping the talks about wanting to acquire the veteran captain for the upcoming regular season, but of course, giving him up would be disastrous for Dallas Stars in every sense.
Like Phoenix Coyotes’ captain Shane Doan, Morrow is also agitated due to the fact that Dallas Stars have not been able to bring in a solid ownership group, depriving the team of negotiation abilities and various other rights.
But according to GM Nieuwendyk, Morrow is here to stay.
"We had a good talk the other day, and I told him I very much believe there’s a place for him on this team," Nieuwendyk told the Dallas Morning News. "I told him I fully expect him to be out there on the power play in front of the net where he’s always been."
It was also reported by various sources that teams such as New York Rangers, San Jose Sharks and Los Angeles Kings, along with St. Louis Blues, had expressed their interest in trading for the 33-year-old.
When Morrow was contacted about where he sees himself playing next year, the answer was in favour of the Dallas Stars.
"You asked me: Do I want to be a Dallas Star, and the answer is definitely yes," Morrow said. "If they want to trade me or they indicate to me that they don’t want me, then obviously I don’t want to be there or stand in their way. But, until they say that they want to trade me or ask me to waive my no-trade clause, then I’m excited to be on the team and I’m ready to get going next season."
Morrow struggled last season and managed to play just 57 games in which he put up 26 points (11 goals, 15 assists). Next season should be one which Morrow looks to make a comeback or another slump could follow.
