Dallas Stars bounce back; defeat Los Angeles Kings 3-2 in overtime -NHL Match Update
Dallas is off to another two-game winning streak in order to move back up in the Western Conference and retake the top position which they held early on in the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season as the Stars bounced back in the third period
to overtake the Los Angeles Kings, 3-2, in overtime on Wednesday night, November 23, 2011, at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, United States.
The Los Angeles Kings and Dallas Stars are both tied in the West with 26 points and have their next respective contests to allow them to move up ahead of one another.
"I thought we played very good against a good team," Dallas coach Glen Gulutzan said. "Two mistakes, two goals but games are 60 minutes for a reason. It was a good victory for us."
Managing to kill two straight penalties in the opening 20 minutes, the Los Angeles Kings bounced back in the second period with Mike Richards scoring his 10th of the season to put the visitors ahead and Kevin Westgarth for his first less than
a minute later.
Remaining scoreless for the first 40 minutes of game play, Dallas finally had enough as Jamie Benn finally put them up on the scoreboard 2:07 into the third and final period of regulation and Loui Eriksson added his 10th with less than a minute
remaining to equalise the score and force an overtime extension during the final seconds.
"Going into the start of the third, you've got a 2-0 game. They got us on a line change with [Jamie] Benn coming from behind with speed," Los Angeles Kings head coach, Terry Murray, said. "They make a play and then the two goals happened."
Dallas kept the very same momentum heading into the overtime extension and with a little over two minutes to go, Steve Ott potted his fourth and the game-winner to give Dallas those two extra points.
The Stars will be facing off against the Toronto Maple Leafs in their final home game of the month on Friday while Los Angeles has the next two at the STAPLES center against the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday and San Jose Sharks on Monday.
