Dallas Stars rally in third, win 3-1 over New Jersey Devils -NHL Match Update
Dallas gained another valuable two points to stay in lead of the Western Conference with 16, as the Stars rallied in the third period and took a commanding lead, winning over the New Jersey Devils, 3-1, Saturday night, October 29, 2011, at the American Airlines
Center in Dallas, Texas, United States.
New Jersey outshot the home team, 32-22, but still failed to get any goal besides one past a determined Kari Lehtonen, who blocked 31 for a near shutout.
"Both goalies were good", Devils coach Peter DeBoer said in a diplomatic manner for the Dallas Stars. "[Hedberg] always gives us a good game and Lehtonen obviously has had a great start for them. He's playing with a lot of confidence in the net".
The Stars are having one of their most successful runs in recent years, which was slightly disrupted by the Los Angeles Kings that diverted the Dallas franchise from what could have been their ninth straight victory by beating them in their two meetings.
"I feel we got a couple of tough breaks in that game [against L.A.] but tonight was good", Dallas defenseman, Alex Goligoski, said. "We didn't panic after they came back and tied it. After that, I thought we were real calm. It's a good step".
Loui Eriksson opened the scoring midway through the first period for his sixth of the season while they missed to capitalise on a power play opportunity less than two minutes later as New Jersey’s, Petr Sykora was booked for interference with the goalkeeper.
Sykora rebounded for the New Jersey Devils and scored his first of the season at the 12:00 mark in the second period off an assist by Patrik Elias.
Vernon Fiddler made the tie-breaker for Dallas while Sheldon Souray made the insuring goal with three second remaining during the final period of regulation shorthanded to take the match.
Dallas Stars play their final game at home against the Colorado Avalanche on Friday before taking off on four-game road trip.
New Jersey Devils return home on Wednesday to host the Toronto Maple Leafs following a trip to Philadelphia against the Flyers on Thursday for the second time.
