Dallas Stars win 4-1 against the Detroit Red Wings to keep hopes of play-offs alive
The second game of Thursday was hosted by the Detroit Red Wings at the Joe Louis Arena as they were up against the Dallas Stars. The game was very important for the Stars who were looking to establish their position in the top half of the period. A massive
crowd came to witness the game as both teams played the 61st game of their respective campaign.
Though the Red Wings were definitely the stronger of the two teams and came up 14 more goal attempts then the Stars during the game but their lack of conversion of chances saw them losing the game 4-1 in the end. Kari Lehtonen, goal keeper of the Stars was
named the star of the game as he made 38 saves.
The Red Wings made strong start to the period which saw them making shots every now and then. There were several shots on goal but they failed to score any goal early on. With the passage of time the Stars got better and better and started to create chance
for themselves.
However, despite the strong offensive play early on no goals were scored. The Stars took the initiative to score and started to come up with some very strong plays. Consequently, the Stars scored in the 17th minute to get into the lead. The goal
was scored by Mike Ribeiro from a brilliant flick shot.
The Stars continued with the dominating attacking performance which resulted in the away side scoring once again in the final minute to double their lead. The goal was scored by Loui Eriksson from a superb backhand shot.
The period ended with the Stars leading 2-0 as the teams went into the break. During the course of the period, the Red Wings made 8 goal attempts while the Stars made 12 goal attempts.
The second period kicked off with the Stars continuing to dominate the proceedings. However, they couldn’t score any goal early on.
The defence and offence of both teams got better with the passage of time but the Stars were able to take benefit from the close battle as they scored in the 9th minute to further extend their lead. The goal was scored by Krystofer Barch from
a decent flick shot.
The Red Wings were in total command of the game after the goal. The attacked and passed very impressively and it didn’t take too long for them to get past the opposing defence. However, the home team continued to face the problem of not being able to score.
The period ended with the Stars leading 3-0 going into the lead. During the course of the period the Stars made 6 goal attempts while the Red Wings made 14 goal attempts.
The Red Wings started the final 20 minutes of the game on a high as they fired shots on goal every now and then. Their scoring problems continued but they eventually scored in the 17th minute through Tomas Holmstrom from a backhand shot to open
the Red Wings account. The goal was scored during power play.
However, when the power play ended the Stars stepped up their game once again and scored in the 19th minute through Jamie Langenbrunner from a flick shot. This was the final goal of the game as the Red Wings won the game 4-1 in the end. During
the final period, the Red Wings made 17 goal attempts while the Stars made 7 goal attempts.
