Daly Cherry-Evan of Manly Sea Eagles makes it into Australian squad for Four Nations - Rugby
Daly Cherry-Evans has been called up to the 24-man Australian national squad today, October 3, for the fast-approaching Four Nations campaign. Evan will join the squad along with Both Glenn, Brett Stewart, Anthony Watmough and Tony Williams.
Six Australian players will make their debuts in the one-off Test, scheduled to be staged on October 16, in Newcastle against New Zealand, before the start of the Four Nations in November.
Both Dave Taylor and Greg Inglis will undergo physical tests and their performance will decide their place in the Aussie line-up. Broncos centre Justin Hodges and Knights’ Kurt Gidley have missed out on selection.
According to Tim Sheens, the Australian coach, Cherry-Evan’s inclusion in the squad was confirmed because the player has continued to exhibit his on-field brilliance with Manly Sea Eagles. While speaking about his form, the coach stated,
“His form is undeniable. What did they (Manly) lose, six games all season? I think Manly have plenty of claim and I don't think anyone would disagree that the kid (Cherry-Evans) certainly earned an opportunity.”
The coach is convinced of the full potential of Evan, who has recently wrapped up his first year at National Rugby League (NRL) with Sea Eagles, which finished with their Final victory against New Zealand Warriors yesterday.
Jamie Lyon, who captained Manly, is also one of the likely picks for the Kangaroos but the skipper himself was not interested in his spot with the national team from Australia.
While respecting Lyon’s decision of not being part of the Australian side, Sheen stated,
“At this point we don't want to force anyone to do anything so from our point of view it was better going with people who wanted to go. Unfortunately Justin Hodges wasn't available so we're going to have to possibly manufacture something in the centres.”
The 24-man Kangaroos outfit includes the following players:
Darren Lockyer (c), Darius Boyd, Daly Cherry-Evans, Cooper Cronk, Robbie Farah, Paul Gallen, Keith Galloway, Greg Inglis, Chris Lawrence, Luke Lewis, Corey Parker, Matthew Scott, David Shillington, Billy Slater, Cameron Smith, Brett Stewart, Glenn Stewart,
Sam Thaiday, Dave Taylor, Johnathan Thurston, Akuila Uate, Anthony Watmough, Tony Williams and Jharal Yow Yeh.
