Question:

Damage to another vehicle while driving a UHaul?

Back in December, I rented a UHaul van to move, and I purchased their insurance. While parallel parking, I accidentally swiped another car’s sideview mirror, causing the glass mirror to pop out and shatter (the part of the car that physically holds the mirror was fine, no damage was caused). Additionally, there was no damage to the UHaul. I traded information with the driver of the other car (it was actually an airport shuttle van). Upon inspection of the van when I returned it, UHaul found no damage and I wasn’t charged anything.

Now, 8 months later, I received a message from an insurance company, referencing this incident. I called them back and have not yet received a response. What can I expect?

  1. Insurance might want to ask you few question and why 8 months later. I wouldnt worry about. Dont know if you report it or other driver report to insurance. Just tell insurance that you hit the car and no damage and insurance might want to close the case.

  2. They will prob. get a statement from you to see what happened and then go through the insurance you paid for to collect for the claim. They just need you to state you caused the damage to proceed. Good Job on purchasing the insurance!

  3. I suppose it could be the insurance company for the owner of the vehicle you hit.  They may just know you were the driver and may tell you you're responsible.  If thats the case I would then call Uhual and make sure it was reported to their insurance so their insurance can handle it.  Or it could be Uhual's insurance calling just to verify the facts.  Maybe the owner told Uhual's insurance what happened but they need to verify it with out first, incase you say no I didn't hit it or he pulled out.  They  just need to make sure they have it straight before they commit to anything.  My question is did you report it to Uhual, because if you didn't the owner of the other vehicle may have just had his insurance repair it and maybe it just took them a while to follow up on getting the money back and all they have is you as a reference?
