I have comprehensive coverage on my car and yesterday I noticed a big crack in my front fender/bumper.I have no idea how this happened and I can't find any scratches caused by an accident either. Is this type of damage covered in a comprehensive coverage policy?

  1. A 'crack' without any visible causation is not a covered loss under your insurance policy. Ask the mechanic if there is a warranty on the replacement bumper he installed.

  2. It depends on what caused the crack.

If it cracked because it was not properly repaired or is a "low quality front bumper"- that is not covered under most auto policies.

Is it the actual bumper itself that cracked or just the paint? If it's the paint - take it back to the shop that did the repairs and they should correct it.

If the crack is in the bumper itself-- that sounds more like a collision loss- (hitting something) than a comprehensive loss.  (The fish tailing accident sounds like a collision claim as well).

How the damage happened to the bumper determines 1. if it is covered or not    2. if it is collision or comprehensive

  3. Yes, of course it is, provided it is accident damage. But you will pay an excess. It could be cheaper to repair.

Some modern vehicles have little road clearance, and huge front overhangs. Pretty ridiculous, in my opinion. Impracticle.
