    Diseases contribute to fires.

    If a disease kills a lot of trees you can end up with a forest full of standing dead dry trees as fuel just ready for a major fire.

    In some cases a fire is a good thing because it clears out all the dead, sick and dying trees and lets a new forest start to grow.

Damage to forests - no.  Damage to trees - yes.  Both fire and disease are essential to retain the health of the forest.  Both remove dead and weak trees and so allow young vigourous trees to grow to maturity.  There are some tree seeds that will not germinate unless there is a hot fire over them first and some pine cones will not release their seeds until the cone is burnt.  This ensures that the old trees are gone and there is plenty of water, light and space for the tree seedlings.
