Damien Comolli could be hunting a world class player
Liverpool director of football strategy Damien Comolli has revealed that the club is hunting a world class player with a view to signing him in January.
Comolli has confirmed that he has spoken with manager Roy Hodgson as well as the new owners of the club to identify targets for the winter transfer window. He says the club will go all out to make sure
that world class quality players are coming to the club as Liverpool deserves.
"We have a pretty good idea of what we would like to do and we have identified targets.
If there's a possibility of us getting a world-class player, we will have the backing.
John [Henry] and Tom [Werner; owners] want to win and you win with top players," Comolli said, quoted on the Sky Sports website.
However, Comolli has also confirmed that the club is not going to be bullied over the prices of certain players and will not make signings for the sake of doing so. Comolli
has also reaffirmed his stance that the club will not proceed with a potential signing unless Hodgson is completely happy with the target.
"If it can be done in January, great. If it can't because we feel it
is the wrong market or players are overpriced, then we will wait. I'm not going to say we won't do anything in January because that is not the idea [of the manager and owners] at the moment," Comolli added.
The reception of Comolli's appointment has been mixed. There are some that believe every aspect of signing players should be left to the manager but there are others that
believe the Frenchman will take pressure away from Roy Hodgson and allow him to focus on the team.
Betting advice
There is no doubt that Liverpool needs to bring in one or two genuinely quality players if the club is going to make up for a bad start to the season. Nothing less than
a top six place is acceptable for Liverpool, back the club to just about pull it off.
