Damien Comolli says Roy Hodgson will have the final say
In light of the recent debate that whether sporting directors dilute the amount of power held over transfer affairs at different clubs by different managers, Damien Comolli, has come out and said that Roy Hodgson will have the final say in transfer matters
as far as Liverpool are concerned.
Comolli was brought to Liverpool just recently as a sporting and transfer director but his arrival has been seen as a power sharing gesture between the management side of the club’s affairs and the financial side as well.
Comolli spoke to the media recently and outlined the way in which Liverpool might operate while he occupies the transfer director’s post there. He said, "It is about collaboration. A lot of people ask: who is going to make the final decision? I can guarantee
you, 100 per cent, that in this job - especially in England - I have never signed a player without the manager agreeing to it. Never, ever”.
He added, "I don't care what people say. And it won't happen here. If you sign a player that the manager doesn't want you are just throwing money into the bin. We had a very long meeting last week with Roy about the window. We went through the list and there
was one player who Roy said 'This one, I really don't like him, I know him well and I'm not comfortable with him.' So we take him off. It is not issue".
Liverpool do need some reinforcements in the squad and the January transfer window will be a perfect time for the Reds to buy one or two good players. Just month and a half ago, Liverpool were taken over by NESV, New England Sports Venture Company. The new
owners have been hinting that there are funds available for Hodgson to spend.
Comolli elaborated a bit further on this matter as he said, "My feeling about it is that in this economic recession there are so many clubs that are in trouble abroad, more than in England. These clubs are under enormous pressure to sell. So this January
window could be a very different window from what we have seen previously. Players that we would never have thought would be available could be. So that's why we are working away, thinking that if there is the right opportunity we should do it. Strange things
could happen".
