Damien Hill to coach Melbourne Rebels for next two years - Super Rugby News
The Melbourne Rebels board of directors has promoted the assistant coach of the club to head coach and the veteran coach Rod McQueen has been bumped up as director of coaching for the next two seasons. The board has taken the decision after Rod McQueen hinted
his possible departure from coaching responsibilities. McQueen had postponed his final decision until their last match of the current Super Rugby against the Western Force on June17.
Melbourne Rebels club was established in 2010 in Australia and McQueen was given the responsibility of head coach because of his vast experience in the field. McQueen had led the Wallabies team after lifting the Rugby World Cup in 1999 and was helped by
three coaches to uplift the young side to the international level.
Among the other three coaches, Damien Hill was his assistant, Nathan Grey was defence coach and Mark Bakewell was given the responsibility of forward coach. All the coaching staff was determined to elevate the newly established club, but failed to achieve
any remarkable success in their inaugural season of Super Rugby.
The chairman of the Melbourne Rebels, Harold Mitchell, told the media today on June 16, in a press briefing regarding the changes in coaching staff. The press briefing has ended the rumours of McQueen’s possible exit from the Rebels.
Rod McQueen also spoke to the reporters and said that he will not leave the Rebels at this stage. He also said that Damien Hill is very much capable of training the Rebels. He added that, "Damien is very respected by peers and players alike, and he strongly
reflects the culture that we are endeavouring to build at the Rebels."
McQueen further said that, "I believe in what the club stands for and I am determined to do what I can to ensure that these formative years lay a foundation for a truly great club and business. We have the most important ingredient, quality people, now we
must realise our full potential."
The timely decision of the Melbourne Rebels can be helpful for them in the coming Super Rugby seasons.
