Damien Hirst believes Ronnie O’Sullivan is like Picasso – Snooker News
Four-time World Snooker Champion, England’s Ronnie O’Sullivan proved his class once again to the world of snooker in the previous season and claimed the most prestigious tournament, the 2012 World Snooker Championship. With his classy snooker genius in the
previous season, the Rocket was able to claim Player of the Year Award.
O’Sullivan’s close friend, Damien Hirst, who follows him regularly and watches all his matches, believes that the Essex Exocet is just like Picasso for him. Hirst believes that whatever O’Sullivan does is superb and gives all his efforts in the matches.
While speaking to the local media, Hirst said, “To me, he's like Picasso. Or perhaps more like Francis Bacon, because what he does is instinctive. Anything done to the level Ronnie has taken it is art. I'm fascinated by the idea of a person being like a
machine.”
He further added, “I'm interested in the psychological side – players become overcome by the fear of winning. A machine which could play snooker would be brilliant.”
The Wordsley potter tumbled down in the rankings after a poor performance in the 2010-11 snooker season as he was not able to win any major ranking event. Besides, due to his lack of concentration and love for the game, he considered retiring from professional
snooker a couple of times during his season run.
However, he rolled back on his decision of quitting the game and decided to visit Dr. Steve Peters, a sports psychiatrist, to regain his interest and love for the game. Visiting Dr. Peters gave a new boost to his energy and he came back to snooker with a
blow. The Essex potter looked very confident and played impressively from the very beginning of the 2011-12 Snooker Season.
He started his season campaign with a tremendous victory in the first Players Tour Championship (PTC) event and clinched his first minor ranking snooker tournament. The Englishman suffered from glandular fever during his season campaign but despite that
he grabbed the title of 2012 German Masters snooker event.
Due to the after effects of glandular fever, O’Sullivan had to miss the 2012 Haikou World Open and the 2011-12 PTC Grand Finals. However, he came back strongly in the 2012 World Snooker Championship and hit the title spot ousting compatriot Ali Carter by
the score line of 18-11 in the final.
