Damir Dugonjic conquers Men’s 50m breaststroke prelims: Day five – European LC Championships
Damir Dugonjic of Slovenia conquered the preliminary rounds of Men’s 50m breaststroke on day five of the ongoing European Long Course Championships in Debrecen, Hungary on Friday, May 25.
The 24-year-old Dugonjic experienced strong resistance from his strongest challenger in the single lap breaststroke discipline but with his strong determination, he succeeded in securing the fastest qualification spot of the event.
With his impeccable efforts, Dugonjic stayed one stroke faster from his following rival on the finishing end as he touched the wall with the timing of 27.36 seconds.
His gruelling effort remained 0.20 seconds ahead of Fabio Scozzoli of Italy, who made his way into the semi-finals by producing a time of 27.56 seconds.
Scozzoli was chased by his team-member, Mattia Pesce, who was only 0.22 seconds apart and tapped the finishing wall with the timing of 27.78 seconds.
Fourth finest spot of the event was secured by Matjaz Markic of Slovenia who stayed only 0.03 seconds slower from his foregoing finisher and produced an effort of 27.81 seconds.
Similarly, Markic remained 0.12 seconds ahead of Panagiotis Samilidis of Greece, who clocked a time of 27.93 seconds for fifth position.
Moments later, the audience witnessed gruelling efforts of Spain’s Mireia Belmonte Garcia in the qualification rounds of Women’s 1500m freestyle.
The 21-year-old Belmonte Garcia faced no trouble in clinching the finest qualification spot of the distant freestyle event by submitting a time of 16 minutes and 21.60 seconds.
Her fastest qualification struggle was trailed by her teammate, Erika Villaecija Garcia, who was 11.09 seconds apart and entered the semi-final as second best swimmer by reporting a time of 16 minutes and 32.69 seconds.
Villaecija Garcia was chased by Eva Risztov of Hungary, who stayed nearly one second apart and clocked an effort of 16 minutes and 33.56 seconds.
Fourth position of the discipline was secured by Camelia Potec of Romania, who stayed nearly two seconds apart and posted an effort of 16 minutes and 35.46 seconds.
In addition, these qualifying swimmers will compete with each other in the second round of their respective events during the second session of the day.
