Damon Hill: WMSC should axe Bahrain since they failed to care about their people – Formula 1
Former Formula 1 driver Damon Hill has voiced against the rescheduling of the Bahrain Grand Prix in the 2011 Formula 1 season.
Hill said after what the Bahraini government is doing with the protesters in the country, the Formula 1 world should not go there and World Motor Sport Council should decide against the Bahrain GP.
The recent peaceful killing of demonstrators in the Kingdom after the state of Emergency was lifted has provoked Hill to pass these comments.
Stating on whether or not the Formula 1 should go to Bahrain, Hill stated, “If Formula One agrees to race in Bahrain it will forever have the blight of association with repressive methods to achieve order. The right thing to do is to not race in Bahrain
until these doubts have been removed.”
Hill’s comments come in light of the recent statements released from the human rights activists in Bahrain which demanded that Formula 1 race should not be held in Bahrain as a protest against the deaths of innocent civilians.
However, the final verdict is expected to hit the news some time on Friday but the latest comments all indicate that the decision is not going to be in favour of Bahrain.
Commenting on the recent comments of the Bahraini officials that peace has been restored, Hill said, “Bahrain has restored order, but the methods have been questioned by many reliable journalists and human rights organisations. This crisis is an opportunity
for Formula One to show it cares about all people and their human rights.”
Hill added that the peace claims by Bahraini officials are imposed by violent methods for which the Formula 1 world should not go there unless true peace is restored.
The final decision on the Bahrain race will be taken on Friday which will put an end to almost a four-month long running debate. Formula 1 teams are against the race being reinstated in the already squeezed 2011 season.
Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see what the final words from the WMSC are.
