Damon Hill believes Lewis Hamilton made the right decision about his future – Formula 1 news
Former Formula 1 driver, Damon Hill has said that Lewis Hamilton of McLaren has made the right decision to move to Mercedes in 2013.
Hamilton has recently announced that he is going to join Mercedes in the next season as Michael Schumacher’s replacement whose future in the sport is still undecided.
Although, there have been a lot of rumours that the 2008 world champion has moved to Mercedes just because of money. However, Hill has supported the decision of the British driver and said that he has been like a bird in the cage at the Woking based team,
therefore, he is right to make his move to the Silver Arrows where he will surely get a chance to explore more of his potential.
“Lewis has been like a caged bird at McLaren,” Hill told the Daily Mail. “He'd been managed to within an inch of his life. I can't blame him for looking to move elsewhere. Lewis needed to leave McLaren to stretch his wings.”
Furthermore, ex-McLaren drivers, David Coulthard and John Watson have also shown their support towards the decision of the 27-year-old.
Coulthard said that Hamilton has been with the British squad for quite a long time and he should now make his own choices to develop himself as a great racing driver.
“You don't live your whole life at home, even though fridge is always full and laundry gets done for you. At some stage you have to move out. Grow up. Become a man. This is that moment for Lewis,” said Coulthard in The Telegraph.
On the other hand, Watson who was in McLaren from 1979 to 1983 also expressed his views in favour of the Briton and said that he is right to decide about his future as he is all grown up.
“It's like a kid growing up and leaving home, getting away from the parental control,” said Watson.
In addition, he said that although McLaren are a great team but they put limitations on their driver. Thus, he asserted that Hamilton has not made any wrong choice about his career and should try his best to maximise the given opportunity.
