Damon Hill says Lewis Hamilton might look for other teams beyond 2012 – Formula 1 news
Damon Hill says that Lewis Hamilton might look for other teams after his contract ends with McLaren at the end of 2012 Formula 1 season.
Lewis Hamilton has been with McLaren for six seasons and his last one was the worst of his career. Hamilton faced several issues during the season on and off the track. The Brit was criticised for his on-track behaviour and the run-ins with Felipe Massa
did not help his image get any better.
Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone also said that Hamilton may have taken a wrong decision over his hired management as his career took a dip since they took over. Hamilton though came out in defence of his management team and said that whatever has been going
on was his own fault.
2011 season was the first season where Hamilton was behind his teammate in points on the drivers’ championship. Jenson Button finished 2nd in the drivers’ championship and Hamilton finished 5th.
Hill believes that Hamilton might want to go for different challenge in the future and may be looking to find a race seat with a different team.
“He has not made it clear where his future lies,” Hill told the Press Association. “It may be he will seek to move from McLaren. It may be something he feels he needs to do, which will be a bit like leaving home as he's been there since he was 13. So what
he does next, that's going to be a big question mark over the season.”
Hill suggested that Red Bull would be the best fit for a driver like Hamilton. Sebastian Vettel and Hamilton for the same team can only be good for the sport. Mark Webber’s contract expires at the end of 2012, and Red Bull has not given an indication that
they will extend his contract nor have they shown any interest in other drivers to partner Vettel.
“There's no doubt he is an asset as a driver in any team, but there are only certain places where he could fit. If I was Bernie I would probably want to see Lewis with Vettel,” said Hill.
