The Federation International de Volleyball (FIVB) has appointed American Dan Apol (beach volleyball) and Patricia ‘Patty’ Salvatore (volleyball) as referees for 2012 Summer Olympics in London, which is supposed to take centre stage in coming June.
The appointments have been finalized after three-year evaluation process, training and education of international referees at different FIVB international events. These two referees proved their endeavours and fulfilled the requirements of FIVB. They supervised
competitions such as the World Championships, World League, and World Grand Prix for volleyball and the SWATCH FIVB World Tour for beach volleyball.
Dan Apol has a long-term relation with the FIVB. He has spent some 12 seasons on the FIVB World Tour and has officiated 197 matches so far. Moreover, he has served 11 seasons at the national level, where he provided his services at various USA Volleyball
and college events.
The 2005 Acapulco Open was the first international event that created the opportunity for Apol to catch the limelight. Afterwards, Apol actively got involved in many FIVB World Tour events. He served as international referee at the 2006 FIVB Under-19 World
Championships in Bermuda. Next year, he performed his duties as referee at the 2007 Pan American Games gold-medal match. In 2010, he was offered to oversee the SWATCH FIVB World Tour events in Hague and Krstiansand.
The FIVB closely monitored his performance in the last three years and selected him as the referee for Olympics. Apol will be making his Olympic Games debut.
The American female referee, Salvatore, already has the experience of attending Olympic Games. This time, she will make her fourth appearance in the Olympics. More precisely, it will be her fourth consecutive appearance in the Olympics. She attended the
1996 Atlanta Olympic Games and also earned the right to supervise the volleyball matches in the 2004 Olympics.
Moreover, she attended 2008 Beijing Olympics and served as official referee. Once again, the FIVB has acknowledged her skills and has selected her as the official referee for Olympic Volleyball Tournament.
