Dan Haren shines as Los Angeles Angels defeat Detroit Tigers 1-0 - MLB Update
The Los Angeles Angels romped to a 1-0 triumph in the second game against the Detroit Tigers at Angel Stadium of Anaheim on Tuesday, July 5 to take 2-0 lead in the three-game series.
It was the game of the pitchers, as both starters offered a splendid display with their swinging unplayable pitches. The Angels’ starter Dan Haren went for nine innings allowing just two hits and made nine strike-outs to grab his ninth win of the season.
Taking this win, Haren recorded his third-straight and sixth triumph in the last ten games.
"Danny should frame that one," Angels’ manager Mike Scioscia said. "That's incredible against a very tough line-up, guys who can do a lot of things -- especially against Verlander. You know you're not going to get a lot of room for error."
It was important meeting for Haren, as his parents were especially present in a packed stadium to see him making his 100th win in a spectacular way. After Verlander left in the eighth inning, Haren took more pace and overpowered all the remaining batters
he faced to complete his 13th career full game under the fireworks.
The Tigers’ ace Justin Verlander had exceptional pitching but he made a mistake in the second inning when Howard Kendrick stretched his legs all the way from the first inning and stopped after completing one run on a line drive by Erick Aybar. The hit came
after the Home Plate Umpire Angel Campos ejected the Angels’ top designated hitter Bobby Abreu in the first inning for arguing balls and strikes.
After this hit, Verlander did not let the Angels go for another run and struck-out eight batters to complete his seven innings spell. After enjoying eight consecutive wins, it was something that made Verlander a little disappointed but he quickly overcome
the condition and said, "He's a great pitcher. Good pitching beats good hitting. Our guys went out there and battled, but he was lights-out tonight. All you can do is refocus and come out here tomorrow. It is a new day. That's the lovely thing about baseball."
The Tigers’ closer Joaquin Benoit threw just one pitch in the eighth inning.
It is the Angels fourth straight win and they did not allow more than one run in each of their last four games. Their starter Tyler Chatwood will try to keep this winning streak going with his rebound performance, as he has lost his previous game 0-5 against
the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 1.
The Angels managed to put in a decent performance as they restricted the Tigers’ offence from scoring big hits. The Tigers will be looking to improve their performance for their next match-up.
