Dan Haren’s pitching helps Los Angeles Angels defeat Detroit Tigers 5-1 – MLB Update
Los Angeles Angels’ starter, Dan Haren had an extraordinary day with the ball as he pitched nine innings and gave up just one earned run with an ERA of 2.89 in the Angels’ 5-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park, Detroit on July 30.
The first three innings of the game were scoreless as the batters played unorthodox shots against the tricky pitches. In the first inning, Bobby Abreu hit a triple-run shot towards deep right-centre while Maicer Izturis flied out to left-field, Torii Hunter
grounded out to third base and Vernon Wells popped out to short-stop position.
Similarly, the Tigers’ batters also looked powerless as Miguel Cabrera fouled out to short-stop, Victor Martinez grounded out to first base and Jhonny Peralta grounded out to left-field without adding any run to the score-board. Abreu walked during the third
inning but Hunter struck-out swinging and Wells flied out to right-field.
Tigers scored their initial run in the fourth inning to take a 1-0 lead when Magglio Ordonez singled to centre-field and Andy Dirks posted a single run. The game levelled 1-1 during the fifth inning when Hunter hit a single-run shot towards left-field and
Peter Bourjos added a tie run for the Angels.
In the sixth inning, the Angels extended their lead 3-1 by contributing two runs. Bourjos hit towards pitcher, Howard Kendrick posted a single run and Mark Trumbo moved to second base. The second run was taken by Erick Aybar when Jeff Mathis hit a sacrifice
fly towards right-field. The pitchers controlled the runs during the seventh inning.
Haran presented just six hits and one run to the Tigers including one walk. He was able to strike-out only one batter on his 113 pitches. During the eighth inning, the Angels added two runs to their score-card to move it 5-1. Trumbo hit a double-run shot
towards deep right-centre and Aybar added one run.
Izturis doubled to deep left-field and Trumbo scored the final and last run for the Angels. The Tigers missed some runs in the ninth inning when Cabrera singled to centre-field while Ordonez popped out to short-stop, Brennan Boesch fouled out to catcher
and Martinez grounded out to first base without contributing any run.
With this impressive victory, the Angels lead the four-game series 2-1.
