Dan Henderson as Chael Sonnen’s assistant coach at The Ultimate Fighter – UFC News
In an exciting turn of events, former middleweight contender Chael Sonnen has revealed that he has chosen light heavyweight contender Dan Henderson as his assistant coach for The Ultimate Fighter season 17, when Sonnen will take on UFC light heavyweight
champion Jon Jones.
In an interview with MMAJunkie.com, Sonnen revealed that he is Henderson to prepare him for the fight against Jones and at the same time be his assistant coach at The Ultimate Fighter season 17.
“We're on great terms (and) we've always been on great terms,” said Sonnen. The American Gangster added that Henderson will be in the corner for him when he takes on the champion.
“You've got to understand, what Dan and I have got is like the military. Our gym has got an order, and Dan is one of the coaches. He's above me. I don't talk back to Dan, and if Dan wants to say something, that would be the way it is,” said Sonnen.
Henderson, who currently stands with 29 wins and 8 losses in MMA and 6 wins and 2 losses in the UFC, was the one being considered as the number one contender to take on Jones. He was scheduled for a title shot at UFC 151, but due to a leg injury sustained,
Henderson had to back out. UFC President Dana White tried to replace Sonnen with Henderson but Jones refused to fight, saying he would not fight Sonnen until the latter comes through the proper channel.
However, now Jones is ready for a Sonnen showdown, even though the American Gangster has not fulfilled Jones’ requirements.
When the fight between Jones and Sonnen was announced, Henderson was among the many critics.
“I guess I should just quit training to win fights and to be exciting for the fans and just go to s--- talking school,” Henderson tweeted back then.
Not just Henderson, a lot of other fighters who were hoping to get a title shot such as Lyoto Machida were upset over the decision, but nothing could change Dana White’s decision.
For now, it is certain that Henderson will be assisting Sonnen on TUF 17.
