Dan Marino tees off at Miccosukee Championship 2010
American Football has finally made its way to a golf course in Miami, Florida – an absurd occurrence to say the least. Legendary Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino will be teeing up today (14th October, 2010) at the Miccosukee Golf and Country Club
in a bid to win the $600,000 at stake. Sponsored by Kyle Busch Motorsports, the Miccosukee Championship falls under the nationwide tour and takes place on an annual basis.
The quarterback showed up for the pro-am session on Wednesday and he was really excited to be part of this event. Marino told the press that it was his first time that he was getting a chance to play golf and he was looking forward and try his luck at the
Miccosukee Championships. The 49-year-old exclaimed that he loved the sport and preferred relaxing on a golf course in the summers.
Marino is a new name in golf, but the man is well-known in the field of football. After his retirement from football in September, 2000, the number 13 tried his luck at golf. He tried to make a cut in the U.S. Open and the U.S. Amateur but failed.
However, on Wednesday, the Pennsylvanian footballer made a commanding appearance at the Miccosukee Golf and Country Club. Despite his obvious golfing expertise, Dan Marino made a fluke at the number 18th hole; he aimed a long hit on the green
in search of an eagle, but the ball plunged over the pin and crossed the green. There were no spectators nearby or else, there would have been a huge jeer. Marino is a busy man or else he would have realised that he has no future in golf.
Considering his current position, Dan Marino said, “I‘d like to get good enough to maybe play in some of the amateur senior stuff, maybe in a year or two. Just to have fun with the people you meet.”
Marino has a firm affiliation with the Miccosukee tournament as Don Strock is the executive director of the tournament. Don Strock was Dan's quarterback reserve at the Dolphins. Dan said that he learned a lot from Don Strock not only in football, but about
golf as well.
Dan said, "He taught me how to play, literally, when I first got down here, I was 21 and never really played golf in my life. But because Nat Moore played and Don played and some other guys did, also, we would go over to the Doral Silver course. I started
to learn and got into it.''
Attending the question answer session with the press, the 49- year-old commented that football was his game and he would never change that.
While answering to another question regarding the Dolphins, the new comer took some time and said that he was satisfied with the performance of the team, although he realised that they were not consistent with their winning strategy.
The man who was always huffing and puffing on the football ground was on a different frequency at the Miccosukee Golf and Country Club. He was calm and quiet and he did not react when his shot missed the green. When asked about the difference between the
two sports, Dan responded with a smile and said that he possessed different emotions for golf as it was relaxing for him.
This is it for the Miccosukee championship that is starting today at the Miccosukee Golf and Country Club, carrying a purse of $600,000. $97, 384 will go to the winners’ bank account and Chad Collin, who is the defending champion of the Miccosukee Championship,
won’t be there to stop the participants from taking his crown. Dan Marino, the famous footballer who once played for the Dolphins will also be teeing off, although there are no chances for him to win the tournament.
