Dan Uggla shines as Atlanta Braves beat Philadelphia Phillies, 3-2 – MLB News
Atlanta Braves’ second baseman, Dan Uggla had a remarkable day with the bat as he went 2-for-3 and scored three runs in the Braves’ 3-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies, at Turner Field, Atlanta, on May 15.
Uggla expressed his excitement and said, “You see how bad I've been scuffling so far this year. It feels good to be able to feel like you contributed. It just helps you feel more a part of the team. I already do. The guys have made me feel welcome. Even
so, you still want to do your part.”
Pitchers out-classed the batters with their impressive throws in the first three innings. Braves took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Uggla completed a single run on an in-field hit of Freddie Freeman. On the other hand, the Phillies broke their silence
in the sixth inning by adding two runs in it.
Placido Polanco had a walk and scored one run on the hit of John Mayberry Jr. Then, Mayberry hit a solo homer during sixth inning to go-ahead of the Phillies. It was the second home run for Mayberry in the current season. Braves tied the game at 2-all, when
Uggla walked and reached at the third base on the sacrifice fly of Freeman.
The score were level until the seventh inning. Uggla drove a shot for the tie-breaking run in the eighth inning, to give the Braves a 3-2 lead. Braves’ relievers threw pretty well as they restricted their rivals to score no more runs. The ninth inning passed
away score-less and the Braves got a convincing win.
Phillies’ manager, Charlie Manuel had a huge ovation for Uggla. While speaking to reporters, he said, “Uggla's been struggling. He stays at it. He kept swinging until he hit one. When he gets going, he gives them some big pop in the middle of their lineup.
Our hitting's got to pick up. We'll find somebody. We'll look until we find somebody.”
Braves’ starter, Tim Hudson also shined as he pitched seven innings and permitted two runs on four hits with two earned runs. He gave away five walks and struck-out three batters.
Roy Halladay pitched right through the game and allowed just three runs on eight hits with seven strike-outs. Despite his spirited effort, he was unable to snatch a win for his team.
