Dan Uggla shines as Atlanta Braves defeat Philadelphia Phillies 3-2 - Part 1
Dan Uggla put in a good performance as the Atlanta Braves defeat Philadelphia Phillies 3-2 at Turner Field, Atlanta on Sunday, May 15.
In order to prove himself as a force, Dan Uggla really needed one good game. Baseball fans everywhere know that it is rare to get a break-out game if the pitcher on the mound is Roy Halladay. Better known as The Doc, Halladay barely lets any extra hits pass
him by, let alone runs. Whenever the Phillies have required an edge over their opponent, Halladay has never failed to deliver shut-out innings.
The Phillies are currently leading the National League East and have made a habit of staying on top of the Weekly Power Rankings. They have the best record in baseball, so who would have thought they would lose to the Atlanta Braves with their ace, Halladay,
pitching?
Uggla definitely saved the game for the Braves with his home-run in the eighth inning which gave Atlanta a 3-2 victory over Philadelphia. This game was the third and the final game in the regular season series. The Phillies and the Braves had previously
won one game each.
In this game, Halladay went up against Tim Hudson of the Braves. Halladay’s last start against the Florida Marlins was near flawless but an error by Jimmy Rollins allowed an unearned run which the Phillies’ offense could not chase. Halladay pitched for eight
innings where he allowed a single unearned run to pass him by on five hits as he struck-out nine and walked two. The Braves bat at .258 when they are up against Halladay. In the duration of over 35 innings Halladay has gone 4-0 against the Braves with 25 strike-outs
and an ERA of 1.26.
Hudson recently suffered his third loss of the season against the Washington Nationals where he went a mere five innings in which he sacrificed three runs out of which two were solo homers. He allowed the runs on five hits along with two walks and a meager
three strike-outs. This was Halladay’s first start against the Braves but for Hudson, it was his second time facing the Phillies. Against Philadelphia, he had previously pitched for seven and two third innings where he let only two runs pass him by off eight
hits while striking-out two. The Phillies have been batting .222 against Hudson since the season began with a record of 6-27 with only one hit for extra bases along with three RBI’s.
All was well in the beginning. Halladay pitched a good eight innings where he only allowed three runs to pass him by off eight hits while striking-out seven but a mistake in the eighth inning proved to be fatal for the Phillies.
