Dan Wheldon remembered by McLaren duo Hamilton, Button and others from motorsports – Formula 1 news
Indycar driver Dan Wheldon died on Sunday, October 16 in a horrible 1 car pileup crash in Las Vegas 300.
Wheldon was airlifted and taken to a hospital, but the injuries that he sustained during the crash turned out to be so severe that they became fatal. Most of the British drivers had raced with him and some had followed his progress in Indycar.
McLaren drivers Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button paid their tributes, “This is an extremely sad day,” Hamilton said. “Dan was a racer I'd followed throughout my career, as I often followed in his footsteps as we climbed the motorsport ladder in the UK. He was an extremely talented driver. As a British guy, who not only went over to the States but who twice won the Indy 500, he was an inspirational guy, and someone that every racing driver looked up to with respect and admiration.”
He went on to mention, “This is a tragic loss at such a young age. My heart goes out to his family and friends during this extremely difficult time.”
Button also tweeted on his twitter account that he woke up to horrific news, of Dan Wheldon’s death in crash. He also wrote that he had so many good memories of him, when he raced against him. In addition, he stated that he was a true fighter in his sport. Other than that, he paid his condolences to his family.
Mark Webber also said that he remembered the days they spent in UK in the year 95 and 96 and that he misses him.
Martin Whitmarsh added that Wheldon’s death highlighted the bitter contrast that exists of motorsports, the highs and the lows.
Many other drivers also used their twitter accounts to tweet condolences for Wheldon and paid tributes to him.
Wheldon won two Indy 00 victories and the 2005 Indy car title in his career. He was a very talented driver and champion.
The motorsport world is mourning following his passing. On behalf of everyone Vodafone sponsored McLaren-Mercedes passed on their condolences to his family and friends.
