California-PC’s Dana Vollmer and Auburn Aquatics’s Tyler McGill have won gold medals in the Women’s and Men’s 100m butterfly, on the second day of the 2011 North Carolina Charlotte UltraSwim, held at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Club.
The competition is the second last stop of the 2010-11 USA Swimming Grand Prix Series and is of considerable importance, as it precedes the upcoming 2011 World Championships to be held in Shanghai, this July.
The 23-year-old Dana Vollmer won the title of the Women’s 100m butterfly, clocking a time of 57.82 seconds. She was almost two seconds ahead of her closest competitor, Unattached-PC’s Elaine Breeden, who touched the wall for a silver medal, by posting a
time of 59.26 seconds. The winning times of both these swimmers were comfortably under the 2011 World Championships A-Time Qualification Standard of 59.35 seconds.
Tucson Ford Deal’s Christine Magnuson followed them on the podium for scoring the bronze medal in a fabulous time of 59.66 seconds. She was followed by Una TXLA-ST’s Kathleen Hersey and PPO Montreal’s Audrey Lacroix, who touched the wall in a time of 59.82
seconds and 1:00.31 minutes for the fourth and fifth position, respectively.
Moments later, Tyler McGill demonstrated his gruelling swimming techniques to grab the title of the Men’s 100m butterfly. McGill of Auburn Aquatics touched the wall for gold medal, posting a 53.15 seconds effort. His time was only 0.29 seconds below the
World Championships A-Time Standard and 0.07 seconds ahead of his following swimmer, Eugene Godsoe, who touched the wall in 53.22 seconds to secure the silver medal. Ohio State University’s Timothy Philips captured the bronze medal, clocking a time of 53.26
seconds.
Fourth and fifth spot were secured by Davis Tarwater and Chris Brady, who appeared on the finishing wall with a timing of 53.40 seconds and 53.44 seconds, respectively. All these swimmers posted a time under the World Championships B-Time Standard and failed
to confirm their spots in the USA Swimming Squad for Shanghai.
The competition is in full swing and will end on May 15, 2011.
