Dana Vollmer clinches Women’s 100m butterfly gold: Day one - Santa Clara International Grand Prix
Dana Vollmer of California Aquatics clinched gold medal of the Women’s 100m butterfly on first day of the 2012 Santa Clara International Grand Prix in California on Friday, June 1.
Santa Clara is the seventh stage of 2012 USA Swimming Grand Prix Series, which gives a platform to all international swimmers to race each other in their pet events and find their shortcomings before the 2012 London Olympic Games.
The 24-year-old Vollmer stayed comfortably ahead of her challengers and ensured her place on top of the podium for gold medal with the timing of 57.03 seconds.
She was chased by her teammate, Natalie A Coughlin, who stayed 1.41 seconds apart and hit the finishing blockade with the timing of 58.44 seconds for silver medal.
The second position holder was chased by Jasmine Tosky of Palo Alto Stanford, who proved her mettle for bronze medal of the discipline by submitting a time of 59.63 seconds.
Tosky was chased by Elaine S Breeden of Unattached-PC, who stayed 0.07 seconds slower from the bronze medallist and settled on the finishing end as fourth position holder with the timing of 59.70 seconds.
Fifth fastest spot of the race was secured by Amanda Sims of California Aquatics, who stayed 0.21 seconds apart and reported a time of 59.91 seconds.
The 23-year-old Sims was chased by Kateryna Fesenko of Indiana-IA, who stayed half body length behind and clocked a time of 1 minute and 00.34 seconds for sixth position.
Similarly, Fesenko remained 0.20 seconds ahead of Unattached-PC’s Samantha L Woodward, who secured seventh position of the 100m discipline and produced a timing of 1 minute and 00.54 seconds.
Last spot of the event was obtained by Caitlin A Leverenz of California Aquatics, who stayed 0.34 seconds behind and finished eighth in the event by posting a time of 1 minute and 00.88 seconds.
The session came to an end after the completion of all planned events while the arena enjoyed commendable swims of position holders in the 100m discipline. Furthermore, the winners received awards and accolades for their noteworthy efforts at the medal ceremony
of the championship.
