Dana Vollmer conquers Women’s 100m butterfly title: Day one – 2011 FINA World Championships
Dana Vollmer of USA impressed the Shanghai Aquatic arena in the preliminary rounds of Women’s 100m freestyle meet, on the opening day of the 14th Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA) organised 2011 World Championships in China, on Sunday,
July 24.
The 23-year-old Vollmer remained inevitably strong for the top qualification spot, despite the fact that she was competing with a squad of her strongest rivals including Alicia Coutts, Jemma Lowe and Jessicah Schipper. Vollmer acquired the finest qualification
spot, by producing a scintillating time of 56.97 seconds. She was 0.91 seconds behind Sarah Sjoestroem’s world and championship record of 56.06 seconds, made during July in 2009.
With her gigantic effort, she stayed 0.52 seconds away from her following swimmer, Coutts of Australia, who submitted a time of 57.49 seconds for second fastest spot. She was followed by Jemma Lowe of Germany, who stayed 0.32 seconds behind her and occupied
third fastest qualification spot with a timing of 57.81 seconds.
The fourth fastest spot of the swim was secured by Jessicah Schipper of Australia, who remained 0.05 seconds behind Lowe and submitted a time of 57.86 seconds. She was followed by Ying Lu of China, who sustained the fifth best qualification spot, by posting
a time of 57.93 seconds.
These top-five swimmers successfully overwhelmed the efforts of Swedish swimmer and world record holder, Sjoestroem, who failed to counter the gruelling efforts of her preceding swimmers and completed her swim in a sixth fastest time of 58.10 seconds. In
addition, the arena sighted the superb efforts of Great Britain’s Ellen Gandy and Jeanette Ottesen of Denmark, who displayed their noteworthy effort to pocket the seventh fastest qualification spots. Despite their efforts, Gandy and Ottesen failed to out-touch
each other and ended in a same time of 58.32 seconds for the seventh position.
Vollmer was delighted with her stupendous effort, as she is now one-step closer to win the title of the 100m event. Furthermore, the arena enjoyed the phenomenal efforts of all swimmers, while these participants will compete with each other in the semi-final.
